Sources of Information and Resources

11 July, 2025 by

Within our Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, we use a wide set of sources of information. The list below is not a complete list but does provide information on the main sources of information as well as resources available. In most cases, these data sources present the information and data, but do not have the interpretation around what this means for Hull.

  • The Office for Health Improvement & Disparities’ Fingertips Tool – Our JSNA has a live feed to Fingertips, taking information from Fingertips and displaying it on our JSNA. The data is generally only available for Hull overall so we cannot examine differences within Hull. However, information is presented for other geographical areas including England and the Yorkshire and Humber region so we can use it for benchmarking purposes to assess where Hull sits in relation to other geographical areas. Information on trends over time for indicators are also available so it is possible to examine trends, but also assess if the inequalities gap between Hull and England is increasing or reducing over time.
  • The Office for Health Improvement & Disparities have also produced a Picture of Health intelligence pack for health improvement – This gives information on deprivation, population, mortality and the burden of disease, wider determinants of health, health behaviours, diseases, mental health and wellbeing, vaccination programmes and sexual health for each local authority in the North East and Yorkshire.
  • Hull’s Data Observatory – This gives information on Hull in terms of population, housing, health and social care, the economy and employment, community safety, children and young people, the environment and deprivation.
  • Official information from the 2021 Census is available from the Office for National Statistics. Different information is available such as interactive mapping, exploring local statistics, and from creating a custom dataset.
  • The Official Census and Labour Market Statistics nomis website provides labour market statistics as well as datasets from the Census and local authority profiles.
  • SHAPE Atlas – SHAPE is an online, interactive, data mapping, analysis and insight tool that supports service planning and estates strategy development.  It is free to use by the public sector but you will need to register first.
  • The Office for National Statistics provides information on a variety of different indicators and measures used within our JSNA such as population estimates, population projections, statistics relating to employment, housing, and data and statistics on many other indicators.
  • NHS Digital provides information on the number of patients registered with GPs, smoking status at time of delivery, A&E attendance data, hospital admissions, diagnostic waiting times and activity, ambulance services, clinical indicators and measures around performance and quality, bed occupancy, and data and statistics on many other indicators.
  • The Office for Health Improvement & Disparities provides information on excess mortality as well as various health and disease profiles as well as information on Local Health, children and maternal health, lifestyle and behaviours and their impacts as well as general overarching information within their Health Profiles.
  • Various other data sources were used within our JSNA such as information on breastfeeding statistics, housing and homelessness including affordability of housing, adult social care, schools and education such as school readiness, school absence and educational attainment, deprivation and poverty, benefit claimants, crime data, information from the Global Burden of Disease, screening and vaccination information, children in need, as well as information from national surveys such as the Health Survey for England, Active Lives, Annual Population Survey, etc.
  • Other information has been used such as geographical boundary information from Open Geography to produce the maps used within our JSNA.
  • Local data is also available from colleagues within Hull City Council or the Integrated Care Board, and data from commissioned provider services.
  • The public health intelligence team have commissioned a number of Health and Wellbeing Surveys in Hull for both adults and young people, and information is also presented within our JSNA from these surveys.
  • The Yorkshire Engagement Portal examines different indicators in relation to business and the economy, community safety, industry, jobs, and neighbourhoods with some forecasting to support strategic planning and resource allocation by highlighting future trends across key domains such as income, housing, emissions and population.
  • The Humber and North Yorkshire Insight Bank is a depository for quantitative and qualitative research that has been undertaken across the Humber and North Yorkshire region which is available on NHS Futures, although it does require a login to NHS Futures with a need to request access to the Humber and North Yorkshire Insight Bank.
